Adalat (Nifedipine) is a heart and blood pressure medication whose ingredient is nifedipine. Adalat is the brand name of a medicine whose appearance is yellow crystalline and is insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol. Nifedipine belongs to a class known as calcium channel blockers.The action of Nifedipine is directly on the vascular smooth muscle and it acts as a peripheral arterial vasodilator. The action of nifedipine aids in relaxing the blood vessels and the blood flow is made to flow easily.
This medication is an extended release tablet dosage in the form of calcium channel blocker nifedipine. The content of nifedipine varies from tablet to tablet. The content of nifedipine is either 30, 60, or 90 mg. It is used for oral administration. The tablet consists of an external coat and an internal core. Nifedipine is the content of both these internal core and external coat. The external coat functions as a slow release formulation while the internal core acts as a fast release formulation.
Adalat is the best anti-hypertensive drug which helps in reducing high blood pressure, aids in preventing strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems. Adalat should not be administered in persons who are hypersensitive to nifedipine.

The maintenance dose is usually 30mg to 60mg, once in a day. The medicine should be consumed regularly even if you are feeling better and must be taken everyday at the same time of the day. The dose may be gradually reduced by your doctor. The consumption of grapefruit should be avoided while taking Adalat.

Commonly observed side effects are peripheral edema, headache, dizziness, nausea, flushing, constipation, cramps, sexual complaints, swelling of the ankles/feet, shortness of breath, weakness, tiredness, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, fainting, mood changes, swollen/tender gums, vision changes, serious allergic reaction, etc.

You should inform your doctor regarding all the medicines taken by you even before you start consuming this medication, especially: acarbose, alpha blockers, beta blockers, digoxin, fentanyl, melatonin, quinidine, drugs affecting liver enzymes that eradicate nifedipine from your body, benzodiazepines, cimetidine, cyclosporine, digoxin, erythromycin, flecainide, fluconazole, imipramine, itraconazole, ketoconazole, Phenobarbital, phenytoin, propafenone, ranitidine, warfarin, etc.

Adalat (Nifedipine) is recommended in the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and chest pain (angina). Commonly, adalat is been used as a tocolytic (agent which prolongs premature labor). Nifedipine is also indicated in the treatment of high altitude pulmonary edema.
This medication can be used singly or in combination with other drugs.

Adalat (Nifedipine) is to be protected from light and moisture and should be stored at room temperature which is less than 86°F (30°C). It should be stored far from children and pets and should be dispensed in tight and light- resistant containers.
