Adapin (Dexopin) belongs to the class of drugs called Tertiary Tricyclic and is an anti depressive drug. Adapin (Dexopin) possess the properties of antidepressant and anxiolytic. Sedative effects and anti cholinergic effects are also produced by Adapin. Peripheral adrenergic blocking effects are produced if Adapin is administered in higher dosage.
Several different types of depression can be effectively treated by Adapin. It can also be useful in decreasing tension, elevating mood, improving sleep and easing fears. This anti-depressant medication is available in the form of capsules which range from 10 mg to 150 mg. Adapin is also made available in the liquid form in 10 mg/ml. The improvement in the symptoms of depression can be observed only after 2-3 weeks while the anti-anxiety effects occur much earlier. Adapin is used to treat depression and anxiety.
The action of Adapin is on the central nervous system, which consists of the brain and nerves. This action helps in taking you away from the depressive mood and thoughts. The action of this anti-depressive medication takes place by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain. The chemical which is responsible for the affection of one’s mood is serotonin. To obtain the desired effects, three to four weeks may be required. Adapin is quite an effective medicine for curing depression
There should be no doubling of the dose to compensate with the missed dose. The medicine should not be stopped abruptly and without consulting the physician. In case of overdose, there are several fatal symptoms which may arise. Few of the symptoms of overdose are agitation, breath problems, coma, delirium, or shock.

Adapin (Dexopin) must always be consumed along with food, and should not be taken on an empty stomach. Usually recommended dosage of adapin is 75 to 300 mg which is given daily at bedtime or is prescribed in three divided doses.

The adverse effects of this medicine are constipation, blurred vision, drowsiness, dry mouth, low blood pressure, Allergies, confusion, increased appetite, insomnia, irritation of tongue / mouth, racing heartbeat / palpitations, ringing in ears, seizures, sexual complaints, skin rash, seizures, etc.

Monoamine oxidase inhibiting drugs like tranylcypromine (Parnate) should be avoided to be used with tricyclic antidepressants, as they may produce high fever, convulsions, and even death.
Cimetidine (Tagamet) may accelerate the breakdown of doxepin by the liver and can increase doxepin blood levels, likely to produce side effects from doxepin.

In case of overdose, you need to call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or not breathing, you need to call local emergency services at 911. If you missed the dose of Doxepin that you take once a day at bedtime and remember on next morning then you could skip the missed dose. If you are taking multiple doses of Adapin per day and miss a dose then take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, it is important that you take any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals

Your doctor will order certain lab tests to check your response to Adapin. Hence, keep all appointments with your doctor and laboratory. You should be completely aware of the effects this medicine can cause you. If you are taking Adapin, you may feel drowsy. Hence, you need to be careful when you are driving a car or operating machinery when you are taking Adapin. If you take alcoholic beverages, consult your doctor about their safe intake when you are taking Adapin. In addition, Cigarette smoking may decrease the effectiveness of this drug. So, consult your doctor in this regard. Do not let anyone else take your medication. Consult your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.

If it is almost time for the next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Recommended in the treatment of numerous types of depression namely, refractory depression; major depression; mixed depression anxiety; neurotic depression and spontaneous endogenous depression.
Adapin (Dexopin) is further indicated in the treatment of anxiety, chronic skin disorders, itching, panic disorders, peptic ulcer disease, postprandial hypoglycemia, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sleep disorders, swelling, etc. Adapin has also been indicated to reduce chronic pain in, arthritis, diabetic disease, herpes lesions, migraines, cancer, tension headaches, or tic douloureux.

Adapin (Dexopin) is to be stored in light resistant and air tight container. It should be stored in room temperature less than 86°F (30°C). The medicine should be stored far from the reach of children. The medicine that is not used should be disposed after the expiry date.

Refrain from using this drug in case you are pregnant or are planning to conceive or are nursing.

Do not smoke or drink alcohol while consuming this drug.

Avoid administering this drug to children below 12 yrs.

Refrain from using this drug if you are taking any MAO inhibitors in the last 14 days or have had a recent heart attack.

Keep your physician informed in case you do have a history of epilepsy, diabetes, glaucoma, heart / liver disease, an overactive thyroid, or an enlarged prostate gland.
