Description

Desloratadine is the active component of Clarinex. Clarinex (Desloratadine) is available in a form of tablets, syrup and reditabs tablets for oral administration. Tablets are light blue in color, round shaped and film coated; contains 5mg of desloratadine. Syrup is a clear orange color liquid, containing 0.5mg/1ml desloratadine. Reditabs are disintegrating tablets, light red in color, flat-faced and round in shape, speckled tablets. Tablets having “A” debossed on one side is 5mg and tablets having “K” debossed on one side is 2.5mg. Clarinex (Desloratadine) is used for the treatment of allergies and hives. Clarinex (Desloratadine) is a group of medicine called antihistamines. Histamine is a chemical present in the body which triggers the alleric reactions, causing itching, sneezing and irritation. Clarinex (Desloratadine) works by blocking histamine and gives relief to the seasonal and indoor allergy symptoms, chronic hives and itching.

How to use

For adults and children of 12 years of age or above, the recommended dose is Clarinex 5mg tablets or Clarinex reditabs 5mg or 2 teaspoonfuls of Clarinex syrup (5mg in 10 ml) to be administered once a day.
For children of 6 to 11 years of age, the recommended dose is Clarinex reditabs 2.5mg or 1 teaspoonful of Clarinex syrup (2.5mg in 5 ml) to be administered once a day.
For children of 12 months to 5 years of age the recommended dose is ½ teaspoonful of Clarinex syrup (1.25mg in 2.5 ml) to be administered once daily.
For children of 6 months to 11 months of age the recommended dose is ¼ teaspoonful of Clarinex syrup (1mg in 2 ml) to be administered once a day.
The recommended dose for adult patients with liver and kidney problem is Clarinex 5mg once every other day.
Commercially available measuring dropper or syringe is necessary to administer 2 ml or 2.5 ml dosage of Clarinex (Desloratadine).
Allow the reditab tablet to disintegrate on the tongue before swallowing it. It can be taken with or without water. When taken with water; intake the tablet immediately as soon as it opens to blister.

Side Effects

Clarinex (Desloratadine) side effects indicated in case of patients 12 years of age and above and those who are taking medication for allergic rhinitis; are pharyngitis, dry mouth, myalgia, fatigue, somnolence and dysmenorrheal.
Side effects indicated in case of patients 12 years of age and above and those who are taking medication for chronic idiopathic urticaria; are headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, pharyngitis, dyspepsia and myalgia.
Side effects indicated in case of pediatrics patients 6 months to 11 years of age are fever, urinary tract infection, varicella, diarrhea, upper respiratory tract infections, coughing, increased appetite, epistaxis, parasitic infections, pharyngitis, rash, irritability, bronchitis, otitis media, somnolence, vomiting, anorexia, insomnia, rhinorrhea, erythema and nausea.
Other common side effects indicated are tachycardia, palpitations, hypersensitivity reactions, seizures, increase of bilirubin and very rarely hepatitis.
Drug Interaction

There are no informations that are indicated regarding drug interactions between Clarinex (Desloratadine) and other drugs except ketoconazole and erythromycin. Administering these drugs with Clarinex (Desloratadine) concurrently, may metabolize differently which may result in increased amount of desloratadine, increasing the risk of side effects.

Uses

Clarinex (Desloratadine) is used to give relief of the nasal and non-nasal symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and perennial allergic rhinitis; and for the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Other Uses

Storage

Clarinex (Desloratadine) tablets, reditabs and syrup should be stored at 25oC (77oF). Excursion permitted at a temperature between 15o-30oC (59o-86oF). Avoid exposure above 30oC. Protect from sunlight and moisture.
Precaution

Clarinex (Desloratadine) is a pregnancy category C, which means, it is harmful for the unborn child. Physician should be consulted.
Patients allergic to Clarinex (Desloratadine) or allergic to any inactive ingredients of Clarinex, should consult the physician before administering the medication.
Patients suffering from liver or kidney disease should be cautious and consult the physician before administering Clarinex (Desloratadine).
Clarinex (Desloratadine) passes through breast milk. So it is recommended to stop nursing during medication.
