Description

Depakote (Divalproex sodium) is useful in the treatment of epilepsy and mania associated with bipolar disorder. It is also useful in the prevention of migraine and in the control of behavioral problems that are associated with dementia. The ingredient of this medicine is divalproex sodium. This medication works by reinstating the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain.
Sodium valproate and valproic acid are present in Depakote (Divalproex sodium). This medication is to be taken orally. The tablets of Depakote (Divalproex sodium) are available in three different strengths. The three different strengths contain divalproex sodium equivalent to 125 mg delayed-release tablets, 250 mg delayed-release tablets, or 500 mg delayed-release tablets of valproic acid. Cellulosic polymers, diacetylated monoglycerides, povidone, pregelatinized starch (contains corn starch), silica gel, talc, titanium dioxide, and vanillin are the inactive ingredients of Depakote (Divalproex sodium).
In case the dose of Depakote (Divalproex sodium) is missed and it is time to take the next dpose then one should continue with the schedule dose and avoid doubling of doses. There should be no overdosing of Depakote (Divalproex sodium) too. In case any over dose of Depakote (Divalproex sodium) occurs then, immediate medical attention should be sought for.
Depakote (Divalproex sodium) is contraindicated in people suffering with hepatic disease or significant hepatic dysfunction or in persons hypersensitive to the drug and in people with known urea cycle disorders.
Depakote (Divalproex sodium) should be consumed regularly, to get beneficial results. Care should be taken to consume the medicine at the same time everyday so as to keep the amount of medication in the blood constant.
In case this medicine is been taken for seizures, then you should avoid stopping this medication without the consultation of your doctor.

How to use

This medicine is to be consumed orally and must be taken with food in case of stomach upset. Avoid swallowing the tablet as a whole. Avoid crushing or chewing the tablet as it may irritate the mouth or throat.
The dose varies from person to person. The recommended dose is 10 to 15 milligrams which has to be taken once daily. The quantity of tablets or capsules taken, the time between doses, and the duration the drug is to be taken is all dependent on the medical problem.

Side Effects

Abdominal or stomach cramps (mild); change in menstrual periods; diarrhea; hair loss; indigestion; loss of appetite; nausea and vomiting; trembling of hands and arms; unusual weight loss or gain; clumsiness or unsteadiness; constipation; dizziness; drowsiness; headache; skin rash; unusual excitement, restlessness, or irritability; etc are some of the side effects experienced by Depakote (Divalproex sodium).
Drug Interaction

The below mentioned drugs may interact with Depakote (Divalproex sodium):
• Antacids.
• Anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen).
• Aspirin.
• Barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions).
• Blood thinners.
• Isoniazid.
• Medicines for mental depression, mental problems and psychotic disturbances mental problems.
• Meropenem.
• Rifampin.
Uses

Depakote (Divalproex sodium) is useful to treat seizure disorders, certain psychiatric conditions (manic phase of bipolar disorder), and is further useful in preventing migraine headaches. It may be further indicated in other mental disorders (e.g., schizophrenia).
Storage

The Canadian product of Depakote (Divalproex sodium) should be stored at room temperature between 59 and 77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C), while the US product should be stored at room temperature below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C). It should be stored away from light and moisture and not in the bathroom.
Precaution

• Your physician must be informed if you are allergic to valproic acid or valproate sodium or if you have any other allergies.
• This medicine must not be used if you have certain medical conditions like liver disease, pancreatitis, certain metabolic disorders (urea cycle disorders).
• You should keep your physician informed regarding your medical history, particularly of: alcohol abuse, bleeding problems, brain disease (dementia), kidney disease, low body water (dehydration) and poor nutrition.
• This drug should not be used when pregnant as it may cause birth defects and harm to an unborn baby.
• Your physician should be consulted regarding breast feeding.
