Desyrel (trazodone hydrochloride) is useful in the treatment of depression and also some times in insomnia. The ingredient of this anti depressant is trazodone hydrochloride. This antidepressant is chemically not related to tricyclic, tetracyclic, or other known antidepressant agents. The drug Desyrel (trazodone hydrochloride) is an antidepressant and hypnotic agent. This drug is a serotonin uptake inhibitor which is used as an antidepressive agent. This drug helps patients whose depression fails to respond to other medications. It is to be taken orally and is available in the form of tablets in varying strength. The strengths available are 50 mg, 100 mg, 150 mg and 300 mg tablets.
This medicine is not to be indicated in patients who are hypersensitive to Desyrel. It works by restoring the balance of a certain natural chemical (serotonin) in the brain. Desyrel (trazodone hydrochloride) functions as a serotonin agonist at high doses and a serotonin antagonist at low doses. Alcohol or drowsiness causing medications (eg, tranquilizers, pain medicine, and antihistamines) should be avoided while consuming this medicine.
Desyrel (trazodone hydrochloride) is highly beneficial in patients with major depressive disorders and other subsets of depressive disorders. It is generally more useful in depressive disorders associated with insomnia and anxiety. This drug fails to increase the psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders.
In case of missing a dose of Desyrel (trazodone hydrochloride) the, avoid doubling the dose in case it is time for the next dose. Continue with your regular dosing schedule. Immediate medical attention should be sought out in case of overdosing of medicine.

Desyrel (trazodone hydrochloride) is to be taken orally, one or two times a day. The usual dosage recommended in milligrams of Desyrel (trazodone hydrochloride) is 150.

The side effects produced by Desyrel (trazodone hydrochloride) therapy are fainting spells, fast or irregular heartbeat (palpitations), painful erections or other sexual dysfunction, skin rash and trembling.

Desyrel (trazodone hydrochloride) therapy interacts with the following medicines:
. Herbal medicines that contain kava kava, St John's wort, or valerian
. Linezolid
. Medicines indicated in high blood pressure
. Medicines indicated in seizures
. Other medicines for depression

Stored at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) and should be stored far from light and moisture. It should not be stored above 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). It should be dispensed in tight, light- resistant containers.

• Inform your doctor, prior to taking Desyrel (trazodone hydrochloride) if you are allergic to it; or to nefazodone; or if you have any other allergies.
• Do not take this medication in case you have certain medical conditions like history of priapism from taking trazodone, recent heart attack, personal or family history of bipolar disorder, personal or family history of suicide attempts, heart disease (e.g., irregular heartbeat), liver disease, kidney disease, blood pressure problems.
• Care should be taken when using this drug in the elderly as they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug, especially drowsiness and dizziness.
• Do not use this drug during pregnancy and consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
