Imitrex (Sumatriptan) is a drug which relieves migraine headache by causing constriction of the blood vessels. This drug is helpful in both migraine attacks which start with or without an aura. This drug relieves the migraine attacks but fails to prevent or lower the number of these attacks. The constituent of this drug which is indicated in migraine is Sumatriptan. Imitrex (Sumatriptan) acts as a cerebral vasoconstrictor. Imitrex (Sumatriptan) belongs to a group of medicines which is also known as “triptans”. The action of this drug is to lower the substances in the body which stimulates headache, pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other symptoms of migraine.
As far as Imitrex (Sumatriptan) is concern there, will be no question of missing a dose of Imitrex (Sumatriptan) as this medicine should be taken occasionally. In case there is no improvement after the first dose then, there should not be any second dose taken without the advice of your physician. One should avoid taking Imitrex (Sumatriptan) more often then advised. This medicine is available in the form of tablets, injections and nasal spray.
Imitrex (Sumatriptan) should not be taken by persons with uncontrolled hypertension or patients with history or signs of cerebro vascular or peripheral vascular syndromes. In case of uncontrolled hypertension, Imitrex (Sumatriptan) increases the blood pressure, hence it should not be indicated in such cases.
Immediate medical attention should be given in case there is any over dose of the medicine. The symptoms of overdose are convulsions, tremor, paralysis, inactivity, erythema of the extremities, abnormal respiration, cyanosis, ataxia, salivation, lachyrimation.

Imitrex (Sumatriptan) tablets are to be taken through the mouth with water. This medication is not to be used regularly. This medicine is to taken when the first symptoms of a migraine attack appear. The second dose in case there is no improvements after the first dose must only be taken as directed by the physician. An interval of at least 2 hours should be there between two doses, and there should be no consumption of any dose more than 100 mg as a single dose. More than 200 mg in total should not be taken in any 24 hour period.

The side effects that are experienced by taking Imitrex (Sumatriptan) are pain or tightness in the chest or throat; allergic reaction: sudden numbness or weakness; sudden headache; severe stomach pain and bloody diarrhea; seizure; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; muscle pain; sneezing, runny nose, congestion, cough; etc.

o Burning, discharge, pain, and/or soreness in the nose; burning, pain, or redness at place of injection; change in sense of taste; discomfort in jaw, mouth, tongue, throat, nose, or sinuses; dizziness; drowsiness; feeling of burning, warmth, heat, numbness, tightness, or tingling; feeling cold, ?strange,? or weak; flushing; lightheadedness; muscle aches, cramps, or stiffness; nausea or vomiting

Anxiety; general feeling of illness or tiredness; vision changes

Other side effects not listed above may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your doctor.

There are certain drugs which interfere with the action of Imitrex (Sumatriptan). Some of such drugs are Ergot-containing drugs and MAO-A inhibitors.

Imitrex (Sumatriptan) is indicated to reduce headaches and other symptoms of migraine.

Imitrex (Sumatriptan) should be should be stored at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). It should be kept away from the reach of children and should be stored in a container.

• Keep your physician informed in case you take antidepressant medications like Celxa, Zoloft, etc before using Imitrex (Sumatriptan).
• Imitrex (Sumatriptan) is not to be consumed if you are allergic to sumatriptan or any other ingredient.
• If you are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant or are breast feeding then Imitrex (Sumatriptan) must be avoided.
• Imitrex (Sumatriptan) is avoided in cases of heart disease, hear attacks, high blood pressure, angina, chest pains, etc.
