Description

Neurontin (Gabapentin) is a prescription drug used alone or in combination with other drugs to treat partial seizures in epileptic patients. Alternatively, this medication is used to treat nerve pain that occurs after an attack of herpes zoster or shingles.

How to use

Neurontin (Gabapentin) should be taken in exactly the way it has been prescribed by the doctor. In the initial phase, dosage will be low. It will be increased gradually. This medication should be had regularly. In case a dose is missed, the missed dose should be taken as soon as remembered. But if it is almost time for the next dose, double dosing is not recommended.


Side Effects

Common side effects that occur in patients who are being administered Neurontin (Gabapentin) are drowsiness, unsteadiness, vision changes, nausea, constipation, dizziness, fatigue, weight gain and dry mouth. If any of these symptoms worsen, the doctor should be informed as soon as possible.

Serious, but unlikely side effects of this medication are swelling in the arms and legs, shaking, tremors, mood changes, behavioral changes and lack of coordination. If any of these symptoms occur, the doctor should be called for immediately.

There are some side effects that are extremely rare but very serious. They are sore throat, persistent fever, cough, unusual bleeding, easy bruising, trouble breathing, hearing loss, irregular heartbeat, redness and pain in the arms and legs and abdominal pain.

Neurontin (Gabapentin) may cause changes in mood. Symptoms of mood change include anxiety, hostility, thought of suicide, agitation, depression and rapid speech.
Drug Interaction

Over Dose

IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed Dose

Uses

Neurontin (Gabapentin) is used to treat partial seizures in epileptic patients who are 3 years and older in age. It is also used as treatment for nerve pain that patients of Herpes zoster suffer from. This drug is also prescribed by doctors to treat other nerve pain conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, trigeminal neuralgia and peripheral neuropathy. This medication may be prescribed for reasons other than the ones stated here.
Storage

Neurontin (Gabapentin) should be stored at room temperature below 25 degree C. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Care should be taken to see that this medication is kept away from direct light, excess heat and moisture. Storage near a sink or in the bathroom cabinet is strictly forbidden. It should not be flushed down the toilet after use. Proper disposal methods can be learnt from the local pharmacist.
