Norvasc (Amlodipine) belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blocker. It is a long acting calcium channel blocker. It is the besylate salt of amlodipine. Norvasc (Amlodipine) obstructs the transport of calcium into the smooth muscle cells lining the coronary arteries and other arteries of the body. It has the ability to dilate the blood vessels, lower the blood pressure and reduce the heart rate which in turn reduces the workload ion the heart and reduces the intensity of angina. It further acts by dilating the coronary arteries and accelerating the blood flow to the heart. To attain the complete effectiveness of Norvasc (Amlodipine), it must be consumed regularly for some time even if you are feeling better. This calcium channel blocker drug fails to treat high blood pressure; it just keeps it in control.
Norvasc (Amlodipine) is not to be prescribed in persons who are sensitive to amlodipine. Certain lifestyle modifications like stress reduction program, exercise and dietary modification enhance the action of this drug. To keep a watch on the side effects of this drug, periodic laboratory and/or medical tests should be conducted. Norvasc (Amlodipine) is not to be taken in larger amounts than recommended nor should it be continued for longer periods than suggested. It is available in the form of tablets.
In case of missing a dose of Norvasc (Amlodipine), it should be taken immediately when remembered but in case time for the next dose is approaching then the missed dose is to be skipped and continue with the regular routine. Avoid doubling of doses to compensate fro the missed dose. The symptoms of overdosing of Norvasc (Amlodipine) are reduced blood pressure, fast heart beat, warmth feeling, dizziness and fainting.

Norvasc (Amlodipine) is to be consumed orally with or without food. In case any stomach upset occurs, to lower the stomach irritation, take it with food. It is to be taken once a day. It should be taken regularly.

There are few drugs that interact with the action of Norvasc (Amlodipine). Keep your phsyciain informed in case you are consuming vasopressin receptor antagonists, sildenafil, conivaptan, cyclosporine, pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

dizziness
fainting
rapid heartbeat

Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your blood pressure should be checked regularly to determine your response to amlodipine.

Do not let anyone else take your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Norvasc (Amlodipine) is to be stored far from light, heat and moisture. Store it at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C).

• Alcohol is to be avoided while taking Norvasc (Amlodipine) as alcohol can further reduce your blood pressure and may accelerate few side effects.
• Avoid the use if you are allergic to amlodipine.
• Use it with great care in elderly patients.
• Should not be indicated in children younger than 6yrs.
• Prior to consumption of Norvasc (Amlodipine), inform your physician if you suffer from certain structural heart disease or liver disorders.
• Norvasc (Amlodipine) is to be taken during pregnancy only if clearly indicated.
• In case of breast feeding, consult your physician before taking the medicine.
