Premarin [conjugated estrogen] is a prescription medication containing a combination of estrogens that is mainly used to treat menopausal symptoms in women. Hot flashes, vaginal burning, irritation, dryness and night sweats are the main symptoms of menopause. This medication is also used as replacement therapy for estrogen in women who have undergone hysterectomy or ovarian failure or another cause which led to the loss of natural estrogens. Premarin [conjugated estrogen] may be prescribed by doctors for other reasons than the ones stated here.

Premarin [conjugated estrogen] should be administered exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Dosage instructions should be strictly followed.

Women who are being treated for menopausal symptoms will start experiencing a reduction in their symptoms within 3 weeks of starting therapy. Night sweats and hot flashes will reduce within 1 to 3 weeks of therapy. Symptoms such as vaginal burning, irritation, and dryness may take about 3 weeks to reduce.

Women who suffer from moderate to severe menopausal symptoms can be prescribed this medication in combination with progestin.

Premarin [conjugated estrogen] may cause certain side effects in women. In case of overdose, side effects may include vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, tenderness in breasts, withdrawal bleeding, fatigue and drowsiness. If this happens, medication should be stopped immediately and a doctor consulted.

Premarin [conjugated estrogen] may cause drug interactions when administered in combination with the following medications:

 A blood thinner such as warfarin
 Raloxifene
 Corticosteroids like prednisone
 Tamoxifen
 Medications that remove estrogen from the body like St. John's wort, phenytoin and Phenobarbital
 Rifamycins like rifabutin
 macrolide antibiotics like erythromycin
 medications for seizure like carbamazepine
 azole antifungals like itraconazole

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include severe nausea/vomiting, or excessive or unusual vaginal bleeding

It is important that you and your physician regularly re-evaluate your need for this medicine. Non-drug therapy to help prevent bone loss includes a weight-bearing exercise plan, as well as adequate daily calcium and vitamin D intake. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and pets. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.

Premarin [conjugated estrogen] is used for the following purposes:

 for the treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms of menopause
 for the treatment of moderate to severe menopausal symptoms such as vaginal atrophy
 for the treatment of patients in the advanced stages of androgen-dependent carcinoma of the prostrate (only for palliation)
 for prevention of osteoporosis in women going through menopause
 for treatment of breast cancer (only for palliation) in select men and women suffering from metastatic disease.
 For the treatment of hypoestrogenism caused due to castration, hypogonadism or primary ovarian failure.

Premarin [conjugated estrogen] has to be stored in a cool and dry area. It should preferably be kept at room temperature below 77 degrees F. It should be kept out of reach of children and pets.

Premarin [conjugated estrogen] should not be prescribed on women who have untreated abnormal genital bleeding.

This medication is not to be prescribed on women who have estrogen-dependent neoplasia.

This medication is not to be prescribed on women who have a recent history of pulmonary embolism or active deep vein thrombosis.

This medication should not be prescribed on women who have suffered from myocardial infarction or stroke recently (in the past 1 year) or who have a kidney or liver disease.
