Description

Prilosec is composed of active ingredient omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium and other inactive ingredients. Prilosec with active ingredient omeprazole is available as delayed release capsule. Prilosec with active ingredient omeprazole magnesium is available as delayed release oral suspension. Prilosec (omeprazole) and Prilosec (omeprazole magnesium) is indicated for the treatment of gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, heartburn, symptoms related to GERD, pathological hypersecretory conditions and erosive esophagitis. Prilosec (omeprazole) is available in different strengths like 10mg, 20mg and 40mg capsules for oral administration. Prilosec (omeprazole magnesium) is available in packets containing 2.5mg and 11.2mg of omeprazole magnesium.

How to use

Prilosec (omeprazole) delayed release capsule should be swallowed whole. If any patient is unable to swallow the whole the patient can administer Prilosec (omeprazole magnesium) delayed release oral suspension capsule. Prilosec (omeprazole) delayed release capsule should be administered orally and before taking food with antacids.
For the adult patient with gastric ulcer, the initial recommended dose is 40mg of Prilosec (omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium) once a day for 4 weeks to 8 weeks.
For the adult patients with active duodenal ulcer, the initial recommended dose is 20mg of Prilosec (omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium) once a day for 4 weeks and sometimes it can be extended to 8 weeks.
For the adult patient with erosive esophagitis and accompaning symptomatic Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), the initial recommended dose is 20mg of Prilosec (omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium) a day for 4 weeks to 8 weeks.
For the adult patient with pathological hypersecretory conditions, the recommended initial dose is 60mg once a day to a maximum of 120mg of Prilosec [omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium] three times a day.
For the adult patient with symptomatic Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and at the same time with no such esophageal lesions, the recommended dose is 20mg of Prilosec (omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium) a day for 4 weeks.

Side Effects

In case of adults patients the most common Prilosec (omeprazole) adverse effects found in administering the medication are abdominal pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and flatulence.
In case of pediatric patients the most common side effects are same as that of adults except respiratory system events and fever which are most frequently indicated.
Other adverse effects reported are constipation, rash, dizziness, upper respiratory infection, asthenia, regurgitation, fatigue, fever, back pain, muscle weakness, muscle cramps, jaundice, dry mouth, tachycardia, dry skin and vertigo,.
Drug Interaction

Prilosec (omeprazole) may reduce the plasma level of atazanavir, if Prilosec (omeprazole) is used concurrently with atazanavir.
Prilosec (omeprazole) may reduce the plasma level of nelfinavir, if Prilosec (omeprazole) is used concurrently with nelfinavir.
Prilosec (omeprazole) may increase the serum level of tacrolimus, if Prilosec (omeprazole) is used concurrently with tacrolimus.
Prilosec (omeprazole) may increase the plasma level of saquinavir, if Prilosec (omeprazole) is used concurrently with saquinavir.
Voriconazole may increase the plasma level of omeprazole, if Prilosec (omeprazole) is used concurrently with voriconazole.
Over Dose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
Notes

Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor will order certain lab tests to check your response to omeprazole.

Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Uses

Prilosec (omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium) is a proton pump inhibitor indicated for the treatment of duodenal ulcer in adults; treatment of gastric ulcer in adults; treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) in pediatric patients and adults; maintenance and healing of erosive esophagitis in pediatric patients and adults and treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions in adults.
Storage

Store Prilosec (omeprazole) delayed release capsule between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F) away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture. Prilosec (omeprazole magnesium) delayed release oral suspension should be stored at a temperature of 25°C (77°F), excursions permitted to 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F).
Precaution

Concomitant gastric malignancy is not desireable. Precautions should be taken.
Atrophic gastritis is noticed occasionally in gastric corpus biopsies from the patients those who are treated for long term with Prilosec (omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium).
Combination use of Prilosec (omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium) and amoxicillin may result in serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions that have been indicated with patients going through penicillin therapy.
For pregnant women, clarithromycin is harmful as it may create hazard to the fetus. So precautions should be taken in concomitant use of Prilosec (omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium) and clarithromycin.
