Proctosedyl is an ointment available in a 30 g aluminium tube with a plastic nozzle. Proctosedyl ointment is composed of two active ingredients, Cinchocaine hydrochloride and Hydrocortisone. Cinchocaine hydrochloride belongs to a class of drugs known as local anaesthetics. It works by temporarily inhibiting the pathway of pain signals along the nerves. Pain is caused by the stimulation of pain receptors at the end of the nerves which causes the sodium to enter the nerve endings which further builds up an electric signal. When these electric signals build to a big one it passes through nerve to brain and interpreted as pain. Cinchocaine hydrochloride stops the sodium to enter the nerve and inhibits the electric signals to grow which causes the numbness and decrease pain in the area where it is applied. Hydrocortisone belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works by lowering the substances that cause inflammation of blood vessels. It helps in inhibiting swelling, itching and discharge.

Proctosedyl (Cinchocaine hydrochloride & Hydrocortisone) ointment can be used with or without the plastic nozzle provided with the tube.
Nozzle is used when the ointment is directed to use for the deeper area inside the rectum. Before use, wash hands and screw the nozzle on to the tube. Insert the nozzle through anus. Squeeze the tube and simultaneously pull out the nozzle gently. Remain in same posture for 1 to 2 minutes then wash hands and nozzle thoroughly after use.
Proctosedyl (Cinchocaine hydrochloride & Hydrocortisone) ointment can be applied with fingertips when the ointment is directed to be applied on and around the anus. Before use, wash hands; squeeze out a small amount of ointment on to the fingertip. Apply in thin layer on and around the anus, over the painful or itching area, over the sore. Wash hands after use.
Proctosedyl (Cinchocaine hydrochloride & Hydrocortisone) ointment should be used twice in the morning and in the evening and after every bowel movement.
Proctosedyl (Cinchocaine hydrochloride & Hydrocortisone) ointment should be used as a short term treatment, preferably not more than 7 days.

Like all other drugs, Proctosedyl (Cinchocaine hydrochloride & Hydrocortisone) ointment can cause side effects.
The possible side effects could be skin rash or any skin reaction because the ointment contains wool fat (lanolin).
If the medication is used for a long time then there is a possibility of having adrenal suppression. Signs of adrenal suppression are lack of concentration, lack of appetite, stomach pain, weight loss, feeling sick, being sick, nervousness, fits and feeling hungry.
The physician should be consulted if any of the side effects get serious or lasts longer.

The patient should inform the physician if any other medicine is taken recently or undergoing any medication. No significant drug interactions are reported.

Proctosedyl (Cinchocaine hydrochloride & Hydrocortisone) ointment is used for the treatment of anal itch, piles (haemorrhoids) and anal fissures.

Store Proctosedyl (Cinchocaine hydrochloride & Hydrocortisone) ointment at a temperature below 25°C (77°F). Keep the medicine in a safe place away from children and pets.

Do not use if allergic to any of the ingredients of Proctosedyl (Cinchocaine hydrochloride & Hydrocortisone) ointment.
Consult the physician immediately if any allergic reaction occurs; such as rashes, swelling of lips, face, throat or tongue and breathing trouble, after using it.
Do not use if there are any kind of infections.
