Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] is a medication that is used for treating patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease and moderate to extreme cases of Restless Leg Syndrome also known as Ekbom Syndrome and RLS. It is not essential that the person suffering from RLS also suffer from Parkinson disease and vice versa. Also Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] doses prescribed to both the patients differ. Generally lower doses of Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] are prescribed to patients suffering from RLS which has to be taken daily once usually during bedtime. However higher doses of this medication are prescribed for patients suffering from Parkinson disease which has to be taken at regular frequency throughout the day.
Ropinole is the main ingredient of Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] and possess properties which are similar to dopamine a naturally occurring chemical in the human body. Low level of dopamine are responsible for causing RLS and Parkinson disease and hence Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] can prove to be effective in treating both this problems and all the associated symptoms like muscle spasms, tremors, poor muscle control and stiffness.
As Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] can make the patients feel sleepy or dizzy they should not indulge in any activity requiring high alertness after taking this medicine. Also doctor should also be informed if you are taking any sedatives or drugs that can make you drowsy before starting with Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride]. Don’t take this medicine if you are allergic to ropinirole or any other ingredient of this medicine. Stop smoking or drinking alcohol while taking this medicine as it can decrease the effectiveness of the treatment. Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] is not recommended for pregnant ladies and feeding mothers.

Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] should be taken only as per doctor’s recommendation. Both the overdose and under dose of this medicine can be dangerous. Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] can be taken with or without food. Patients suffering from Parkinson disease should initially start with .25 mg of Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] 3 times a day and then the dosage are gradually increased depending upon the patient’s response to the medication. Total dose of Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] should not be more than 24 mg/day. However doses may differ for patients suffering from restless leg syndrome.

Patients using Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] can commonly experience stomach pain, nausea, worsened symptoms of restless leg syndrome and Parkinson disease early in the morning. Other common side effects include dryness of mouth, excessive sweating, insomnia, diarrhea, sleeping problems and severe headache. Doctor should be contacted immediately if the patients faint, experience uneven or fast heartbeat, difficulty in breathing, hallucinations, stiffness of limbs and breathing problems.

Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] can interact negatively when taken with sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, anti anxiety medicines, narcotic pain relievers, anti depressants and anti seizure medicine. Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] should be taken with caution with medicines like metoclopramide, levodopa, ciprofloxin, any estrogen, prilosec and fluvoxamine. Inform your doctor about any herbal or non prescription drug you are taking before starting with Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride].

IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, dizziness, hallucinations, excessive sweating, claustrophobia, involuntary muscle movements in the limbs or face, palpitations, weakness, and nightmares.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Patients taking Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] should inform the doctors about all the medications that they are taking before starting with this medicine. Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] should be taken with caution by:
• Pregnant woman, ladies planning to conceive and feeding mothers
• Avoid alcohol and smoking which may decrease effectiveness of Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride]
• As Requip [ropinirole hydrochloride] can make you feel nauseous and drowsy so do not indulge in work requiring high alertness after using this medicine.
