Ceftriaxone is the active ingredient of Rocephin. Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) is a type of antibiotic called as cephalosporin. It is used to treat many kinds of bacterial infections. It is also used before any kind of surgery to minimize the chances of infections. It is a popularly used as an alternate to penicillin for which penicillin causes allergic reactions. Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) acts on bacteria and prevent bacteria’s ability to make and maintain cell wall. Bacteria are vulnerable without cell wall, it perishes. Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) is supplied in a form of injection or infusion.

Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) should be administered at the same time of day to maintain the balance of Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) level in the body system.
The recommended starting Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) dose for common bacterial infections in adults varies from 250mg to 2 grams. It can be administered once or twice equal dose a day for 7 to 14 days. The recommended starting dose for pediatric patients varies depending on their age and body weight. The dose varies from 50mg to 100mg per kilogram of body weight. It can be taken once or twice equal doses in a day for 7 to 14 days.
The recommended Rocephin(Ceftriaxone) dose prior to surgery is 1 gram. It should be administered 30 minutes to 2 hours before surgery.
Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) course should be completed entirely to ensure a complete treatment.

Adverse effects reported using Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) medication are headache, rash, itching (pruritus), diarrhea, pain and inflammation of blood vessels at the site of injection, dizziness, allergic reactions like hives, wheezing and breathing trouble, throat and mouth sores, swelling of throat, nausea, vomiting, anemia, inflammation of pancreas (pancreatitis), inflammation of large intestines (colitis) and to clot blood it takes longer time.

When probenecid or sulfinpyrazone is used concurrently with Rocephin (Ceftriaxone), the drugs may be metabolized differently than it should have been. It causes an increase in an amount of Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) in the body.
When warfarin is used concurrently with Rocephin (Ceftriaxone), the drugs may be metabolized differently than it should have been.
When calcium or calcium containing products are used concurrently with Rocephin (Ceftriaxone), there is likely to have deposits in kidneys and lungs which are dangerous. It affects the newborn more. It is recommended not to be given to newborn babies as they have to intake calcium containing IV products which is a necessity.

Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) is used for the treatment of various common infections caused by bacteria. It is used to treat gonorrhea, infection of the blood (septicaemia or blood poisoning), infections of organs associated with breathing including nasal passages, sinuses, windpipe and lungs or respiratory tract, meningitis and prevention of meningococcal meningitis. It is also used in preventing infections following surgery. It is also used instead of penicillin if penicillin causes allergic reactions.

Store Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) medication at a temperature below 25oC (77oF). Keep away from children and pets. Protect from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.

If the patient is allergic to any of the ingredients of Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) or penicillin type antibiotic, the physician should be informed. Consult the physician before taking this drug.
Ensure plenty of fluid intakes while receiving this treatment.
Premature babies are not to be given this treatment.
As this medication passes through breast milk, the nursing mothers should physician should be consulted before administering.
Pregnant women or women planning to get pregnant should be cautious and seek physician’s advice before starting the treatment.
