Description

Symmetrel (Amantadine hydrochloride) is prescribed for the treatment of the symptoms caused by the various strain of the Influenza Type A virus. The medication is also known to be prescribed for the treatment of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

How to use

Symmetrel (Amantadine hydrochloride) is available in liquid and tablet form. Dosage will vary for each patient depending on the response to therapy and the seriousness of the condition being treated. The doctors’ prescription should be followed strictly as to the dosage and care must be taken to make sure that there is neither a missed dose nor an overdose.

For patients being treated for the Influenza virus, administration of the medication should be started in 24-48 hours after the symptoms appear.

For patients being treated for Parkinson’s disease, instead of stopping medication abruptly, it should rather be done gradually.

Symmetrel (Amantadine hydrochloride) may cause common side effects such as drowsiness, headache, constipation, insomnia, nervousness and dizziness. If they persist, the doctor’s advice should be sought.

This medication may cause serious side effects such as difficulty in urinating, swelling on the feet and ankles, red spots on the skin and vision changes. The doctor should be told immediately if any such symptoms occur.

This medication may cause rare but very serious side effects such as depression, suicidal thoughts, shortness of breath, muscle stiffness, unusual sweating, unexplained fever, fast rate of heartbeat and seizures.

Very serious allergic reactions are extremely likely but in case they do occur, emergency medical help is necessary. Symptoms of an allergic reaction are skin rash, hives, shortness of breath, swelling in the face, throat, lips and tongue.
